High Return on Economic Education at Dawnville Elementary
An all-girl team of fifth-grade ALPHA students from Dawnville Elementary won the regional competition of the Georgia Stock Market game.
The three-member team of Hannah Holden, Kiley Long, and Hannah Marr, with an ending portfolio balance of $108,884.70, will be recognized May 3 in Atlanta during a banquet sponsored by the Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE). Their total represents a percent return on their investments of nearly 9 while Standard & Poor’s 500 Index reported a net drop of close to 3 percent from August to December of 2015.
Dawnville teacher Robin Gordon served as the team sponsor. According to the website for the Stock Market Game at the Georgia Council on Economic Education:
“Economic education is about more than financial literacy. It’s also about the larger economic forces that impact everyone’s financial circumstances in the present and future. With equity markets as the model, the Stock Market Game™ is designed to give Georgia teachers a tool for showing students how scarcity, trade, opportunity cost, voluntary exchange, price incentive, specialization, productivity, and many other economic concepts play out in financial institutions they hear about in the news almost daily. Unlike real equity markets, the Stock Market Game™ offers students a safe and pain-free place to learn that the lessons of market economics can sometimes be costly.”
